This is just a little taste of
the begining of whats to come in the following weeks.
AREAS OF COLLECTING
Autographs For my collection of The Mary Tyler Moore Show cast autographs, click
here. Autographs are one of the more popular fields of collecting, and it can
be very inexpensive too! Most of the stars of The Mary Tyler Moore Show would
gladly send you their autograph through the mail if you politely ask! Here
are some hints on a sucessful reply!
- ALWAYS send a self addressed stamped envolope! This will increase your
chances of getting a reply! This is a good idea because think of how many
requests Mary or Ed receives each week! It will save them money, and like
I said, increases your chance of a relpy!
I reccomend to mail your letter in a 9x12 sized envolope, so your letter
and an 8x10 envolope will fit inside nicely. The 8x10 envolope (what the
star will use to reply with) will be addressed to yourself, appropriatley
stamped. So all the star will have to do is sign an autograph, lick the seal,
and slide it in the mail box!
- Another good idea is to send your own photo, or if not applicable, an index
card. Photos are availible for $5 and up on eBay (
http://www.eBay.com ) and a pack of 100 index cards range for about $1
at the store! Although in the long run photos are worth much more, an index
card can be beautifully framed with a photo!
- Valerie Harper is selling autographed copies of her new book, "Today I
Am a Ma'am" on her official web site ValerieHarper.com
( http://www.ValerieHarper.com
) Get em' while there still availible!! Books Books are another fun area of collecting! I will list a few books below
that I feel are good reads:
By Members of the Cast:
After All - By Mary Tyler Moore (Paperback Availible)
*In Person - By Betty White
*Here We Go Again; My Life in Television - By Betty White
Today I Am a Ma'am - By Valerie Harper
About the Show: *Love is all Around: The Making of The Mary Tyler Moore Show - By Robert
S. Alley, and Irby B. Brown, with a Forward by Grant A. Tinker (Mary Tyler
Moore's Ex-Husband)
* Indicates that that particular book is out of print (OOP). Out of print
books can be found at used bookstores or even flea markets, but the
best place is right here, the internet! I have listed some links below to
help you find that special book you wanted:
Taping TMTMS off of Television:
For television listings, click
here!
This is the cheapest way ( and currently the only way to own most episodes
) to own every episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show! All you need to do is
pruchase blank tapes at the store ( I prefer 8 hour ) and tape away!! It
best to start taping right away, because evreyday the networks are cutting
more and more of the episode! Some hints to having the perfect TMTMS
video collection:
- Store your videos in a "plastic video case" which can be easily purchased
in small quantities at the store. Not only does this make your collection
more attractive, it protects them! For the artsy folk, covers can be designed
and printed off with different computer programs!
- Start recording one commercial before, and end one after. This ensure's
that you are not to miss any of the opening credits, or cut off any of the
closing credits when your record your next episode!
- Also number your tapes! This will make sense when you read ahead.
- Make sure you know what episodes are on which tape by having a master copy,
so viewing your favourite episode is quick, and easy! I recommend writing
the episode titles on an index card to store with your video, or having a
master print out with all the titles of the episodes with which tape
number it's on!
- If applicable, make another copy of all your set of videos, and have one
set aside just incase!

Magazines Magazines are a great area to collect, and generally can be purchased
cheaply! Old TV Guides are my favourite, and they make great art work for
your room or den! The most popular place to purchase them is eBay (
http://www.eBay.com ) and range from $3 and up. The cost of a particular
magazine may depend on: the age, condition, rariety, and what magazine it
actually is! Another thing to watch out for is if it has a mailing label
or not. Most TV Guides that you will find do, but keep searching and you
are sure to find one that dosen't!
